Being a disciple of Jesus Christ is a life-long relationship. The journey begins with one step of faith but you will not reach your ultimate destination in this lifetime. The process is a supernatural work of God within you as much or more than it being concrete steps to be taken. That said, the first steps of the path are clearly prescribed in scripture. The list below provides a quick overview; it is not sequential, and it is certainly not exhaustive. These first steps are merely the first few days of basic training for a Christian soldier:
Be transformed in new life
...do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. (Romans 12:2 NKJV)

Study the word of God - the Holy Bible
...[know] the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17 NKJV)

Pray about everthing
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7 NKJV)

Confess sins to God
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. (1 John 1:9-10 NKJV)

Profess Christ before people
..."whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven." (Matthew 10:32-33 NKJV)

Follow Christ in Baptism
...when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized. (Acts 8:12 NKJV)

Fellowship with other believers
And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. (Acts 2:42 NKJV)
