deny that the holocaust ever happened that the Nazis perpetrated a systematic genocide resulting in the deaths of six million Jews the current explosion of antisemitism around the world has gone hand in hand with this sick rise in holocaust denial that's why the yad vashem world holocaust remembrance center in Jerusalem is so important sorry grenitza the director of christian friends of yad vashem recently gave us exclusive access to Nazi documents from the yad vashem archives that prove the holocaust was no myth and that the Jewish people remained resilient in the face of overwhelming odds take a look well sorry thanks so much for having us here at yad vashem we are in a very very important room here at the museum tell us where we are right now and why it's so important thank you for coming it's our honor we are in the yadosham archives and we are now in the compactosuma this room is a very unique room temperature control where we keep all the original documents that we have been collecting throughout the years this is one of the rooms where we keep it different documents are kept in different types of rooms and we have today in yeah more than 200 million pages of documentation documenting what happened there especially nowadays when the survivors are passing is extremely important yeah and sorry we have holocaust denial today people deny what happened but in this room and here at yad vashem you have the actual original documents i'll take out of this box that i asked to take out of the cabinets a few documents actually four i think and just so people at home know this is a very rare look at these archives we're getting an exclusive look here at yad vashem you know if the Nazis try to dehumanize the Jews um make us all look the same shave our heads give us uniforms give us numbers they even took away our personal names we nyad vashem want to give back the faces and the individual stories to each and everyone and that's why it's so important to create these personal files about the people sometimes communities so that we will know who was there and what happened to them and that's the name yad vashem which is taken out of the verse in Isaiah and within my house and within my walls i shall give you a memorial and a name a yad vashem which will never be cut off so that's exactly what we're trying to do here and we'll start with this file this note was uh thrown out of a train thrown out of a train thrown out of a train um in France at the bottom of the note nana who wrote this letter wrote her home address she finished writing the note and it was thrown out of a train uh filled with Jews being transported from France by the Nazis to Auschwitz we don't know we don't know we'll read the letter in a minute and we'll see that she doesn't actually know where she's going but she finished writing the note to her mother she rolled it up and she threw it out of the train a train worker found it and he was so moved from what he read there that although it was prohibited and he was endangering himself he had the address he decided to send it to the family after the war heimhelzog former president of the state of Israel who is a cousin of the family he is the one who brought us this note to yad vashem i shall come back soon wait for me patiently dearest mother one thousand kisses nana how old is nana where is she going did she survive so many questions she her family again exactly so many question marks a Jewish holocaust survivor from France who became a Nazi hunter after the war wrote many books one of the books is actually a collection of lists of deportation if you look under train number from Paris to Auschwitz you look under g you find Anna Goldberg so if the Nazis uh if she didn't know if Anna didn't know where she's going we now know that she arrived in Auschwitz in September 1942 that's when this train arrived in Auschwitz at that time only Auschwitz one existed beer canal or what did not exist yet there was one gas chambers one crematorium and about two weeks after her arrival she wasn't alive anymore but still how old is she how did she look what did she do well her sister survived and she filled out a page of testimony for yad vashem with the information about her sister she also gave us a picture so now we have a face and a name look when she filled this out only in 1981 what took her so long what took her so long to give us the information well i can tell you that the survivors for years were hoping that they will find their families even until lately sometimes we managed to make family connections people didn't find each other Rudolf Hess was very proud of his position in Auschwitz and used to invite people over for weekends and for holidays to his house and he had a guest book and he used to ask the people to sign in the guest book and i have here the guest book of Order fest this is the actual guest book exactly of the man who ran Auschwitz birkenau correct and he used to ask people to sign in so you can see different handwriting's write different people are writing but this caught my eye and what this person wrote we can't tell whose signature it is but it's one of his guests who said that he wants to thank him for the nicest vacation in his family ever had that's crazy again thinking about what's happening on the other side of the fence literally a few yards away absolutely you sit there you walk there and someone else in the book said thank you for the incredible tour you gave me of the camp which means these people knew they knew they knew they saw and again you can't be in his house and not smell because the gas chambers are here i'm sure there are some screams too absolutely they said you can see you can hear yeah and you can smell it's pure evil absolutely so the person who found this is Lily Jacobs it was the end of the war the jews the people from uh her camp were taken out on the death march and she was left behind because she was very very sick and it was clear that she'll die within the hours once everybody left and only the Muslims the extremely sick Jewish people were left behind she they went into offices trying to look for some clothes to put on maybe to find something to eat and when she opened one of the closets she pulled out what looked like a blanket or a jacket that you could put on herself and with it fill out a book when she opened the book she was shocked to see a picture of her rabbi she continued looking through the album and she found a picture of herself of her two younger brothers and other people from her community now these we call them the Canada commando that was their name that was the special commando they were working at tried to save as many Jews as they could what did they know they knew that a young mother holding a baby will be immediately sent to the gas chambers they know they knew that older people are also immediately sent to the gas chambers young women might be sent to a labor camp and might somehow survive it's wartime i have to go to work but they will not hurt the older people the children so i will give my child to my mother and i will see them at the end of the day at the end of the week at the end of the war so we can see in this picture this young woman taking a right these two young women also taking a right these two young women taking a right but if we look one way led to the gas chambers and death and the other way went to slave labor exactly so they're young enough they can go to slave labor but in this picture do you see what she's holding a baby a baby she's going the other way she's taking a left now this album ends with the horrible pictures of the gas chambers and the crematorium so we begin this album with an entire community and we finish this album with the ashes and that's what Hitler and the Nazis uh wanted to do to the Jewish people to the entire Jewish people at the years of the war we didn't have a jury state i presume and i want to believe that if we would have had a Jewish state we wouldn't be standing here talking about a holocaust and we're saying very proudly in the names of the victims all of them those who survived and those who were murdered i'm Israel and we are here to stay thanks again to sorry granita and the entire team at yad vashem for opening up their archives to us now more than ever we need
